Abandoned home catches fire in Ottawa

News

A house fire in the 600 block of Bronson Avenue in Ottawa Tuesday evening was safely put out by Ottawa Fire Services (OFS).

Shortly after 8:12 p.m., Ottawa fire received a 911 call for dark grey smoke coming from an abandoned home.

OFS says it was a two-storey home that had boarded up windows.

Once on the scene, crews noticed smoke coming from the second floor and initiated a fast attack. They brought a hose through the back door and when entering the building, they were met with heavy flames on the main floor.

A second crew searched for any occupants inside and following two full searches, nobody was found.

OFS did say there were “obvious indications of squatters using the abandoned structure.”

After extinguishing flames on the main floor, they made their way to the basement and were met with more flames.

Ottawa fire says the blaze was declared under control prior to 9:00 p.m. and the boards were removed from the windows to allow the smoke to escape the building.
