Driver caught at 133 km/h over limit on Ottawa’s ‘Limebank Raceway’
Anyone wondering why the stretch of Gloucester’s arrow-straight Limebank Road is widely known to police and the “street racing” community as Limebank Raceway had another answer this week.
Ottawa police landed a big (fast) fish on Monday, when an alert traffic officer spotted a low-slung black car headed straight toward him.
In the restrained language of a news release on Nov. 26, the Ottawa Police Service noted: “At approximately 3:00 p.m., during routine traffic enforcement, an OPS Traffic Escort and Enforcement Unit officer observed a vehicle travelling at 213 km/h in an 80 km/h zone on Limebank Road.”
Police would neither confirm nor deny that the speed was a record for Ottawa.
The news release also noted the officer “safely conducted a traffic stop, explaining to the driver why they were pulled over.”
During the interaction, the officer learned that the driver, 22, formerly lived in Ottawa and was visiting at the time.
He also had several outstanding warrants.
The driver was arrested and held for a bail hearing.
He was charged with dangerous operation of a vehicle, a Criminal Code offence, and stunt driving under the Highway Traffic Act.
His driver’s licence was suspended for 30 days, and the rental vehicle was impounded for 14 days. (Police did not officially identify the car, although a photo accompanying the news release referred to a “Black Mercedes” and it appears to be a Mercedes sedan.)
Upon conviction, the driver could face a fine of between $2,000 and $10,000, a licence suspension of one to three years and, possibly, up to six months in jail.
